I have been in Jyvaskyla, Finland for a about one month. 24,August was such an
unforgettable day in my life, because I left my family, friends and boyfriend
to a totally unfamiliar countryFinland. And I will start a new life
here in Jyvaskyla! For the first few days, my Chinese neighbors and
student tutor Hillamaria helped me a lot to settle down and manage
a daily life here. And what I felt most exciting and happy
thing was the meeting for my new classmates in the SpoSMapro. It’s
my first time to study abroad and of course the first time to be
among an international group. They really impressed me a lot.
First, we study together and have a good interaction with each other.
Specially in the social interaction skill course. We find out our
similarities in one group such as sharing our same goal to graduate from
JYU among the whole group. We have certain stereotypes towar
d each culture. However we are still enjoying the surprise as a gift
from the cultural shock.
Second, we play together and have nice experiences after class. We go to
parties, bars , pizza houses together in our leisure time. We would
like to know more about each other. We come from six different countries,
Finland, Germany, Holland, Britain, Columbia, China. However destiny lets
us meet here in the city of Jyvaskyla. We cherish this precious friendship
among our group, gradually finding our identity as one member of
this international family.
Third, we celebrate together and have a wonderful night to celebrate
my birthday. I was moved when I opened the door to see my dear classmates
standing outside with a basket of gifts. They are lovely persons and
lovely birthday presents as well. The Chinese red wine made me feel at home
and Finnish marshmallows are so nice.We celebrated in my country’s style.
We ate some dumplings that night and played a game that was once very
popular in China. Interesting stories always have ups and downs.
That day I imagined everything was going well, however I got sick
that night and had to lie on bed at once to have a good rest. Everybody
cared me a lot, thoughwe had to end that birthday party so early.
I got so many blessing words the day after the party.
I felt honored and happy to have this big family!
Now let’s pass on the custom of our family. Would you like some Finnish
marshmallows, Mexican Nachos, Dutch lasagna or Chinese dumplings ?
