Hello everyone I am delighted to introduce myself, my name is Brian I’m from Ireland and I have started the Masters programme in Sports Management and Health Promotion back in September. It’s hard to believe it’s been three months since the course started; it’s been a fantastic time meeting new people and experiencing new things. It’s been a busy few months settling in and completing assignments, projects and presentations, and of course making time to socialise as well!
This is not my first time in Finland and I have lived and worked in Helsinki for two years previously before moving up north to Jyväskylä. So needless to say its not been a huge culture shock for me, although it is slightly colder than Helsinki! Jyväskylä has a population of around 137,000 people and has a huge number of students in the city. Jyväskylä is widely known around the world for the famous Neste Oil Rally Finland formerly known as the 1000 Lakes Rally. Many famous sports people are recognised with the city, the inventor of pesäpallo (Finnish baseball) Lauri Pihkala studied and lived in Jyväskylä and received an honorary doctorate in Sport Sciences from the University of Jyväskylä back in 1969. Matti Nykänen the former Finnish ski jumper who won five Olympic medals and nine World Championships and is one of Jyväskylä’s most famous sons, and also has a ski jumping hill named after him here in Jyväskylä. Another thing to note is that the University of Jyväskylä is the only university in Northern Europe with a faculty of sports. All in all, Jyväskylä and the University is an impressive and exciting place to complete your studies, I would highly recommend it 🙂
